If you like the look of the new Death Korps of Krieg models, but aren’t interested in playing Astra Militarum, we’ve got the perfect plan for you. This is KreigFall: 2,000 points of Chaos Traitor Guard.
Everyone Falls
One of the best things about playing Chaos is that with very few exceptions, anyone can be corrupted and fall to Chaos. If half of the Astartes can fall, than so can mortals, even if those mortals are as stoic and unrelenting as the Kriegsmen. Even if you missed out on the Krieg release box, this weekend is the preorder for individual Krieg boxes.
Our plan for using Krieg as Traitor Guard involves these three boxes: Death Korps of Krieg infantry, the Kreig Command Squad, and a box of Astra Militarum Bullgryns. In total, we’ll need six boxes of Krieg infantry, and one each of the Command Squad and Bullgryns.
This list uses the Chaos Cult Detachment. That makes Traitor Guard units Battleline, meaning we can take up to six of them. Additionally, the Detachment rule is Desperate Devotion.
Desperate Devotion
Each time a DAMNED unit from your army with the Dark Pacts ability is selected to make a Normal or Advance move or declare a charge (excluding units that arrived from Reserves this turn) it can make a Desperate Pact. If it does, until the end of the phase, add 2″ to the Move characteristic of models in that unit and add 2 to Charge rolls made for that unit.

Marching To War
It’s no secret that I love a horde list, and this is a very fun one. We have 60 Kriegsmen in six squads. Three squads are led by Traitor Enforcers. To get these Enforcers, we’ll need half of the Krieg Command Squad box and the Bullgryns box. Traitor Enforcers give their units the Brutal Example special rule.
Brutal Example
Once per turn, while this unit is leading a unit and contains a TRAITOR ENFORCER model, you can target that unit with the Fire Overwatch Stratagem for 0CP, and can do so even if you have already targeted a different unit from your army with that Stratagem this phase. Each time you use this ability, one Bodyguard model in that unit is destroyed.
Since we’ll have a wall of Kriegsmen, having the ability to get multiple Overwatch Strategems off is important against melee forces. In this list, we’re using Kriegsmen for their intended purpose: eating up lots of wounds while our scoring units do work. Giving three squads some extra help against a charging horde of Orks or World Eaters gives us a bit more teeth to our Kreig-shaped speed bump.
Helbrutes aren’t the best units at the moment, but they have a useful aura ability and some punch at range. With their Dark Ascension rule, units with the Heretic Astartes keyword and within 6″ of a Helbrute gain both abilities when using Dark Pact. This means that our Traitor Guardsmen can use Dark Pacts to gain both Lethal Hits and Sustained Hits 1. At Rapid Fire range, each unit would be firing 20 shots that hit on 4s, where each Crit rolled automatically wounds the target and adds another hit automatically.
The Helbrutes are all loaded with Missile Launchers and a twin Lascannon. Each of these is plenty capable of punching into vehicles and more elite troops. We need all the help we can get there, because the standard Kreigsmen aren’t going to be doing that sort of work. That’s why we’re also bringing two War Dog Brigands.
Brigands have a Havoc multi-launcher, which has indirect fire. They also have a Daemonbreath Spear, which is a Strength 12 Melta. There’s also a 12 attack Avenger chaincannon to handle thinning out hordes. When targeting the closest enemy unit, Brigands increase their AP value by 1.
It’s fine to roll out a horde of traitor Krieg and a bunch of support, but that isn’t going to win games on its own. That’s why we’ve got two squads of Raptors, each paired with a Chaos Lord with Jump Pack. These are great for dropping on Secondaries with their Deep Strike ability, and harassing rear lines if needed. Finally, we’ve got a squad of Chaos Chosen to hold main objectives.
Putting It Together
Our KriegFall list isn’t the most optimized competitive list, but it does look fun to play. And, it’s a great way to use some of those awesome Krieg minis without diving into Astra Militarum. We could run up to 3 squads in any Chaos list, and still have fun painting up some Kriegsmen in whatever sort of Chaos colors we like.
