Introducing Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings

Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings is a fantasy mass battle miniatures wargame from Para Bellum Games. The core gameplay is a modern take on rank and flank wargaming, with accessible rules but deep strategy. The miniatures are highly detailed and look great on the table, and the lore is rich and evolving.

On The Table

Conquest: TLAoK is played with regiments of 38mm (yes, 38) miniatures. A number (usually 1 or 4) of miniatures go into a stand. A stand is a square base with circular holes for the individual minis. Regiments are made up of typically 3-6 stands. There are also characters, who are on their own stands, and all sorts of amazing monsters, giants, titans, and creatures, that are on their own bases. Each unit is given a type, such as Light, Medium, or Heavy.

Uniquely, there is no deployment phase to start the game. All units march onto the field. There are restrictions on what unit types can arrive when. In round 1, only Light units can enter. In round 2, Light and Medium units can enter. And from round 3 and on, Light, Medium, and Heavy units can enter. And, once your forces have moved up, units can enter from the sides of the battlefield, so long as they’re behind your front line of troops.

Each round, players choose the activation order of their units by ordering a deck of cards. Then, players take turns activating a single unit at a time. Each unit can take two actions, such as moving, charging, or fighting. If a regiment takes damage, a model is removed from a stand, and when there are no models left on a stand, that stand is also removed.

Actions like attacks and defense are done by rolling a number of six-sided dice. Unlike many other wargames, in Conquest, you want to roll low. A roll of a 1 is great, and a roll of a 6 is very bad. You’re always trying to roll under a given number.

Games can take up to 10 rounds, but with the simplicity of the gameplay, the game moves along rather quickly. There is a score limit that can be reached to end the game earlier, depending on what scenarios and objectives are used. The core of the game isn’t about all-out murdering, it’s about holding objectives and outscoring your opponent.

The World

The world of Conquest is rich with lore. Currently, there are 9 factions, with many more to come in the future. There’s a little something for everyone, from knights, vikings, undead, dwarves, orcs riding dinosaurs, and all sorts of other exciting factions.
